Using Multimedia to Enhance Teaching and Learning

Students of the digital generation respond much better to multimedia than simple text based resources. Research has shown that because of multimedia stimulation, young people’s brains are literally wired differently. This session will look at first why and then how to produce multimedia resources incorporating video and sound to enhance teaching and learning. Hey Paul my session has a lot of similar themes to your one. I will be discussing why what and how to use multi media in the mathematics classroom but can be applied to any classroom really. Looking forward to your session....

Hey Jennie, it's a shame that I can't go to your session first - I bet I could have picked up some tips.

In my proffesional opinion, multimedia is indeed better than simple text resources. However, students tend to be distracted during lessons by these electronic devices, whether it be surfing on "BookFace" and other instant messenging clients. The underlying problem is that the system is not well overlooked even when there is an existing administritive control, such as NetOP.

Is this a just a case of training the students in doing the right thing over a longer period of time? Surely if you can blank their screens when you want their attention you can stop the distraction?

As well as using PhotoStory3 I would recommend Animoto and Voicethread which both do different things. Both of these now have education versions and Animoto allows bulk uploading of users so all students can access an image simultaneously.

Also, Promethean's ActivStudio has a built in recorder so you can take screen videos.

Youtube conversion, I use Zamzar and Convertube

Paul,

Where did you get that video that you showed during your presentation of the lifestyle of a teenager. The hour by hour use of technology.

Thanks,
